Iconic Actress Cicely Tyson Dies at 96

Famed actress Cicely Tyson, best known for her portrayal of strong African-American women passed away Thursday, her longtime manager Larry Thompson confirmed to news outlets. “With heavy heart, the family of Miss Cicely Tyson announces her peaceful transition this afternoon. At this time, please allow the family their privacy,” according to a statement issued through Thompson.

Her cause of death was not immediately given.

Tyson’s career spanned more than seven decades, earning her an Oscar nomination, two Emmy awards, and a Tony award.

In 2016 President Barack Obama awarded Tyson with the Presidential Medal of Honor. “In her long and extraordinary career, Cicely Tyson has not only succeeded as an actor, she has shaped the course of history,” President Obama said.

Her memoir, “Just as I Am: A Memoir,” was released earlier this week where she reflects on a live well lived.
